Offer Description

Call for one (1) research grant for a PhD Students in the area of Medieval History, Medieval Archaeology, Historical Archivistics (Medieval).

 

The research project leading to the completion of the academic degree of Doctor of the selected scholarship holders will need to be justifiably integrated   in  the lines of action of the  Strategic Project  of the Institute of Medieval Studies, and must be developed exclusively by candidates or postgraduate students enrolled in the following Doctoral Programme:

 

Doctoral Programme in History of the Nova University of Lisbon, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (NOVA FCSH);.

 

The duration of the scholarships is, in general, annual, renewable up to a maximum of four years (48 months), and cannot be awarded for a period of less than 3 consecutive months.

In the case of a mixed scholarship, the period of the work plan that takes place in a foreign institution cannot exceed 24 months.

 

Admissibility requirements for the application

It is essential, under penalty of non-admission, to attach the following documents to the application:

● Elements of the identity card/citizen card/passport.

● Curriculum vitae of the candidate.

● Certificates of qualifications of the academic degrees held, compulsorily specifying the final classification and, if possible, the classifications obtained in all subjects taken, or alternatively, declaration of honour from the candidate that he/she has completed the degree of BA and MA by the end of the application deadline.

● Recognition of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions and record of the conversion of the respective final classification into the Portuguese classification scale, or, alternatively, declaration of honour from the candidates that he/she obtained the recognition of the foreign degree equivalent to the degree of BA or MA the application deadline;

● Letter of motivation.

● Letters of Recommendation (two letters from different people duly signed);

● Research work project to be developed in the PhD (maximum of 10 pages);

● The application and all the documents associated with it, including the letters of motivation and recommendation, must be written either in Portuguese or in English.

Regarding the admissibility requirements mentioned above, the following should be noted:

● In the case of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions, and in order to ensure the application of the principle of equal treatment to applicants holding foreign and national academic degrees, the recognition of these degrees and the conversion of the respective final classification into the Portuguese classification scale is mandatory.

The recognition of foreign academic degrees and diplomas as well as the conversion of the final classification into the Portuguese classification scale may be requested in any public higher education institution, or in the Directorate General of Higher Education (DGES, only in the case of automatic recognition). Regarding this matter, we suggest consulting the DGES portal through the following address: http://www.dges.gov.pt.

● Only candidates who have completed the cycle of studies leading to a bachelor or master’s degree by the application deadline will be admitted. If they still do not have the certificate of degree completion, a declaration of honour from the candidates that they have completed the necessary qualifications for the competition by the application deadline will be accepted. The awarding of the scholarship is always dependent on the presentation of the proof of the academic qualifications required for the effect.

 

Research Work Project 

The applicant must attach to the application a proposal of the project to be undertaken, including a title, abstract, keywords, a brief state of the art, justification of the relevance of the research to be carried out, objectives, description of the project, sources and bibliography considered relevant (maximum 20 references) and respective chronogram. The applicant should also make clear how the conclusion of the project will contribute to the strategic objectives of the Institute of Medieval Studies. The candidate may also include other information that he/she considers relevant for the evaluation.

Researcher Profiles: The Doctoral Scholarship intended for holders of BA and MA degrees who have enrolled in the Doctoral Programme in History and who wish to carry out research activities leading to the attainment of the academic degree of Doctor at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Universidade Nova and hosted in the Instituto de Estudos Medievais or at host institutions associated to the PhD Programme.

Research fields: Medieval History, Medieval Archaeology and Historical Archivistics (Medieval).

Applications must be formalized, compulsorily, by an application letter accompanied by the following documents:

1. ID (Citizen Card, Passport)

2. Curriculum Vitae;

3. BA Certificate, Ma Certificate, others degree certificates

4. A record of recognition of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions and a record of the conversion of the respective final classification into the Portuguese classification scale, or alternatively, a declaration of honor from the candidate that he/she has obtained the recognition of the foreign degree equivalent to a bachelor's or master's by the application deadline;

5. Motivation Letter;

6. Recommendation letters (maximum of two);

7. Research project for the PhD (maximum 10 pages);

8. The application and all documents associated with it, including the motivation and recommendation letters, must be written either in Portuguese or in English.

 

In the case of academic degrees obtained outside Portugal, recognition of degrees obtained in accordance with DL Nr 66/2018, 16 August, is required; alternatively a declaration of honor explaining that the recognition document will be submitted before the grant’s starting date may be accepted. The submission of the recognition document before the  celebration of the contract is mandatory.

To apply for the PhD Research Scholarship, it is necessary:

  • To hold a master's degree or a duly recognized equivalent foreign academic qualification, or
  • To hold a bachelor's degree or a duly recognized equivalent foreign academic qualification, or alternatively hold a particularly relevant academic or scientific curriculum that is recognized as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the legal and statutorily competent scientific body from the university where they want to be admitted, or
  • To hold an academic, scientific, or professional curriculum that is recognized as attesting to the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies by the legal and statutorily competent scientific body of the university to which they wish to be admitted.
  • To reside in Portugal on a permanent and regular basis, even when the work plan associated with the scholarship takes place, partially, in foreign institutions (mixed scholarships), a requirement applicable to both national and foreign citizens.
  • Not to have benefited from a doctoral or doctoral scholarship in companies directly financed by the FCT, regardless of its duration.
  • The projects presented by the candidates integrate well with  the study plan defined in the doctoral programme and in the strategic objectives of the Institute of Medieval Studies, and for the PhD project to be developed  in two of the following areas of research, in accordance with the Doctoral Regulations:
  • Not to have a PhD degree already.

Benefits

Monthly maintenance allowance:

The grant amount corresponds to € 1 199,64, paid monthly and by bank transfer, according to the table of scholarships values directly attributed by FCT, I.P., in the country (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_2023.pdf ). To this value is to be added a personal accident insurance, and an optional voluntary social insurance at the first level.

Selection process

The evaluation considers the candidate's merit and the adequacy of the project presented to the thesis profile outlined in the objectives of the Doctoral Programme, highlighting its innovative and interdisciplinary character, as well as its integration or adequacy to the strategic objectives of the IEM.

Applications considered admissible will be scored on a scale from 0 to 100 in each of the following evaluation criteria:

● Criterion A - CV, 40%;

o Subcriterion A1 - Graduation Note, 15%

o Subcriterion A2 - Master's Degree, 15%

o Sub-criterion A3 - Publications and active participation in scientific events, 10%

● Criterion B - PhD Project, 40%

o Subcriterion B1 - Scientific merit of the project, 30%

o Sub-criterion B2 – Adequacy of the Project to the objectives of the doctoral program (cf. https://www.fcsh.unl.pt/cursos/doutoramento_em_historia/) and the Strategic Project of the Research Unit (cf. https://iem.fcsh .unl.pt/section2.aspx?kind=formacao&id=946 ), 10%.

● Criterion C - Interview, 20%

For the purposes of the scholarship granting, the candidates will be ordered according to the weighted average of the classification obtained in each of the 3 criteria, translated by the following formula

Final Classification =( ×A)+( ×B)+( × C) 

IMPORTANT NOTE for applicants with degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions: Applicants with diplomas issued by foreign higher education institutions may apply and will be evaluated with the same criteria as applicants with diplomas issued by Portuguese institutions, if they present, in application, proof of recognition of the academic degrees and of the conversion of the final classification to the Portuguese classification scale under the terms of the applicable legislation.  Applicants with foreign degrees who do not submit proof of the conversion of the final classification into the Portuguese classification scale will be assessed with a minimum classification of 10 points in criterion A.  In any case, scholarship contracts with applicants with diplomas issued by foreign institutions will only be awarded upon presentation of the proof of recognition of the academic degrees and conversion of the final classification, as indicated above.

Candidates whose application is evaluated with a final mark of less than 70 points are not eligible for a scholarship.

The Doctoral Scholarships are intended for holders of BA and MA degrees who have enrolled in the Doctoral Programme in History (NOVA FCSH) and who wish to carry out research activities leading to the attainment of the academic degree of Doctor at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Universidade Nova and hosted in the Instituto de Estudos Medievais.

 

The grants will be funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) under the Collaboration Protocol

for Financing the Multiannual Research Scholarship Plan for Doctoral Students, concluded between the FCT and the R&D Unit Instituto de Estudos Medievais, nº 0749.

 

The duration of the scholarships is, in general, annual, renewable up to a maximum of four years (48 months), and cannot be awarded for a period of less than 3 consecutive months.

In the case of a mixed scholarship, the period of the work plan that takes place in a foreign institution cannot exceed 24 months.
