Job Summary:

Project BIO_VALOR - Integrated Specialization Strategy for the Sustainable Enhancement of Endogenous Resources in Organic Fruit Growing, co-funded by: Programa de Desenvolvimento Rural da Região Autónoma da Madeira – PRODERAM 2020, Governo Regional da Madeira, Portugal 2020 and European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD), through the Instituto de Financiamento da Agricultura e Pescas, I.P - IFAP, aims to recruit a researcher, with training and research activity in the disciplinary areas in question, capable of evaluating the influence of soil and climate conditions on the production of traditional varieties of fruit trees, in order to promote their valorization. The work plan is expected to include edaphoclimatic conditions characterization, biochemical and nutritional evaluation of genetic resources and statistical treatment.

Job description:

Project BIO_VALOR - Integrated Specialization Strategy for the Sustainable Enhancement of Endogenous Resources in Organic Fruit Growing, aims to collect agronomic data for agroeconomic optimization of regional fruit production in agricultural systems in MPB. In this context, ARDITI is looking for a doctoral researcher, preferably with proven experience in biofertilizers for agricultural production, biochemical and nutritional determination of bioresources, using bromatological and analytical methods. The selected candidate will assist the project's research team, focusing especially on monitoring edaphoclimatic conditions and characterizing fruit production activities in MPB agricultural systems, on the biotransformation of agricultural waste into organic substrates, and on the evaluation of the use of biofertilizers in agroecosystems.

Admission Requirements:

The ideal candidate must have a valid PhD (obtained within the 36 months prior to the application deadline) in Biological Sciences relevant to the BIO-VALOR project. The candidate will contribute with the work plan detailed below, as well as previous experience, including (but not limited to):

•Background and/or proven research experience in Biological Sciences;

• Experience on the characterization of edaphic parameters;

• Experience in agricultural trials using biofertilizers;

• Biochemical and nutritional assessment of bioresources;

• Experience in the elaboration of research works in the form of scientific articles and in the submission of abstracts and participation in international conferences;

• Knowledge in statistics;

• Demonstrated ability to work independently;

• Fluent knowledge (spoken and written) of the English language.

Workplan:

The selected fellow will assist in the development and investigation of activities related to (but not exclusively):

• Evaluation and monitoring of endogenous genetic resources and edaphoclimatic conditions of agrosystems.

• Phenotyping of genetic resources and traditional varieties of annonaceae, pomoids, and prunoids fruits.

• Analysis of the physico-chemical characteristics of organic substrates.

• Evaluation, processing, and dissemination of project results.

• Preparation and presentation of scientific works related to the research and development activities of the project.

Scientific guidance and workplace:

The proposed work will be coordinated by Prof. Doutor Miguel Ângelo A. Pinheiro de Carvalho (ISOPlexis/Madeira University) and will be conducted at ISOPlexis – Centre of Sustainable Agriculture and Food Technology at Madeira University (UMa), Campus Universitario da Penteada, Funchal, Madeira Island (Portugal).

Duration:

12 months, eventually renewable.

Monthly fellowship subsidy:

ARDITI fellowship stipend is 1 741,00€/month, according to the table of fellowships values determined by the ARDITI (https://cloud.arditi.pt/index.php/s/89WjkokAigiFsTi?dir=undefined&path=%2FBolsas&openfile=24051256).

The fellowship stipend will be paid monthly through bank wire. Personal accident insurance is included with the fellowship. If desired, the fellowship holder can join the voluntary social insurance scheme (SSV), the payment of which will be borne by the contracting institution.

The curricular selection process will be based on:

- Educational background and graduation (40%)

- Skills relevant to the work plan execution (50%)

- Communication skills, assessed from the CV (10%)
