Offer Description

LIP opens a call for selection of fellows a Research Student Fellowship (BI – Bachelor) for participation in the project “Bridging Theory and Experiment: Collider Phenomenology (II)”, reference CERN/FIS-PAR/0032/2021, funded by FCT/MCTES through national funds (State Budget – OE).

The work plan will be carried out in the context of the activities of the Phenomenology group at LIP, namely in the research connected to the study of jets and its application to the high-energy nuclear collisions produced at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider at CERN, Switzerland).

Jets are the fragmentation result of a very high-energy quark or gluon. When traversing the state of matter produced in heavy-ion collisions (the Quark-Gluon Plasma), these high-energy particles lose energy, and the resulting jet is modified with respect to proton-proton collisions (jet-quenching). The exploitation of jets as tomographic probes of the QGP medium has been exemplified through various methods, such as top-initiated jets and novel jet clustering algorithms. The latter approach is rooted in the concept of parton formation time, which translates the duration required for two partons to behave as distinct coloured sources of radiation. These techniques have proven highly effective for investigating ultra-relativistic energies. However, it's essential to acknowledge that jet transverse momentum spectra encompass a broad range of values, and non-relativistic effects are anticipated to prevail, particularly for jets initiated by heavy quarks. Therefore, to precisely ascertain the parton formation time and subsequently relate it to the evolving dynamics of the QGP, it becomes imperative to assess the non-relativistic corrections to this phenomenon. The selected candidate is expected to evaluate these corrections through analytical calculations of two-gluon emission from heavy quarks in a vacuum setting, complemented by Monte Carlo event generators aimed at validating these findings.

Legislation:

The fellowship contract will be established according to the “Regulations for Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology” (https://dre.pt/application/conteudo/127238533) and to the Status of Scientific Research Fellow (Law nº 40/2004, August 18th, and its successive amendments).

Duration:

The fellowship has a maximum duration of 3 months, with a foreseen starting date on May 01, 2024. The fellowship cannot be further renewed.

The working plan will be carried out at LIP-Lisbon under the supervision of Dr. Liliana Apolinário.
