Offer Description
The Centre for International Studies (CEI-Iscte) of Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon is accepting applications for 1 (one) Post-doctoral Research Fellowship, in the area of International Studies or similar, aligned with the CEI-Iscte regional line “Middle East and North Africa”, under the FCT ‘Regulamento de Bolsas de Investigação’ (RBI) and the ‘Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação’ (EBI).
The grant will be funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) under the framework of the Programmatic Pluriannual Funding, with the reference UIDP/03122/2020.
Workplan:
This grant will contribute to the development of CEI-Iscte's strategic objectives through:
- Consolidation of the research activities within the research group "Democracy, Activism and Citizenship";
- Support the development of the regional line "Middle East and North Africa".
- Publication of scientific articles;
- Support for the organisation of events and participation in national and international events;
- Support for the preparation of applications for national and international funds.
Duration of the grant:
The duration of the BIPD is seven months, and it is renewable for the duration of the project's eligibility period, up to a maximum of three years, as provided for in the FCT Regulation for the Research Grants. Once the BIPD contract has ended, no new scholarship contract may be signed between the same host institution and the scholarship holder, in accordance with number 7, of Article 7 of the FCT, I.P. Research Scholarships Regulation no. 950/2019.
The scholarship is scheduled to start by the end of May or beginning of June 2024.
Application’s Deadline and Procedure:
The call for applications for the Postdoctoral Research Fellowship is open from 6 to 17 May 2024.
Applications must be formalised on the Iscte Recruitment Portal (https://recrutamento.iscte-iul.pt/jobs), in Portuguese or English, by submitting the following documents:
1. Motivation letter with a maximum length of 1000 words, including: i) a reflection on the activities relevant to this call, carried out in recent years, and future prospects for the work to be carried out; ii) and a reflection on the candidate's profile suitability for the research activities envisaged within the scope of the project and within the Research Unit for which they are applying (CEI-Iscte).
2. Detailed Curriculum Vitae, including the scientific publications considered relevant.
3. Document certifying the doctoral degree. In the case of holders of a doctoral degree obtained abroad, they must submit a document proving its registration, equivalence or recognition, under the terms of current legislation. Any formalities in this regard must be completed by the date the contract is signed.
4. Other certifying documents considered relevant.

Admission Requirements:
- Doctoral Degree in the area of Social Sciences as Political Sciences, Anthropology or similar. The PhD degree must have been obtained less than three years prior to the date of the submission of this application;
- The Post-doctoral research must be carried out in a different host institution than the one where the research leading to the doctoral degree was carried out;
- The grant-holder should not exceed with the celebration of this Research Grant contract, including eventual renovations, a cumulative period of thirty-six (36) calendar months with this type of research grant, in accordance with the Regulation for Research Fellowships of FCT, I. P. n. 950/2019.

Additional Information
Monthly maintenance allowance:
The amount of the grant corresponds to €1,801.00, according to the table of grants awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in the country https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_atualizacao-2024.pdf). To the amount of the grant is added the Voluntary Social Security Insurance (SSV), and is covered a work personal accident insurance. The grant will be paid monthly by bank transfer.
Requirements for Admissibility of the candidates
The following are eligible to apply to this call:
- National citizens or citizens from other Member States of the European Union;
- Non-EU citizens;
- Stateless persons;
- Citizens benefiting from the status of political refugee.
Selection methods:
The candidate's selection methods will focus on the following assessment criteria:
a) Academic background (reflecting classifications and academic degrees)- 50%
b) Professional Curriculum Vitae (reflecting scientific and professional background) – 40%;
c) Motivation letter – 10%.
If the jury considers necessary, candidates may be called for an interview, which will weight 30% of the final score. If the jury considers that the interview is not necessary, the assessment of criteria mentioned above [a), b) and c)] will have a final weight of 100%.
Jury Composition:
Dr Ana Mónica Fonseca, Assistant Professor at Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon (Iscte) and Director of CEI-Iscte, as President; and Dr Ana Lúcia Sá, Assistant Professor at Iscte and Integrated Researcher at CEI-Iscte, and Dr Giulia Daniele, Assistant Professor at Iscte and Deputy Director of CEI-Iscte, as Members.
Communication of the results:
The final evaluation will be sent to all candidates by email, with a list sorted by the final evaluation result. The candidates have a period of 10 working days to make their comments during a prior hearing of interested parties, under the terms of Article 121 and following the Administrative Procedure Code. The final decision will be issued after the analysis of the statements presented during the prior hearing of interested parties.
