2 (two) Research Fellowships (BI) for a MSc Student or a BSc enrolled in a non-degree course

 

2 Research Fellowship(s) (BI) is(are) open at the FCiências.ID – Associação para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Ciências, for the project “STATSOFFSHORE/CEAUL”, financed by national public entities (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera), under the following conditions:

 

  1. Scientific Area: Probability and Statistics
     
  2. Admission requirements: Degree in Applied Statistics, Applied Mathematics or Biology. Proficiency in spoken and written Portuguese, specifically European Portuguese at C2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, certified by the relevant diploma, or as a native language. This is required as the project will produce results in European Portuguese, according to the work plan, and it is essential that the candidate is able to produce written reports and oral presentations in Portuguese. 
     
  3. Additional optional skills and qualifications: Advanced knowledge of R, experience in spatial data analysis, experience in modeling using GLMM-class models, and Bayesian inference.
     
  4. Contracting requirements: Presentation of the academic qualifications and/or diplomas. Enrolment in  Master’s degree in Statistics or Data Science, or non-degree course developed in association or cooperation between a High Education Institution and one or multiple research units. 
     
  5. Work plan: Carry out the environmental characterization of areas designated for the installation of offshore wind energy infrastructure by the Plan for Renewable Ocean Energies (PAER) in mainland Portugal. Specifically, the analysis of fishing activity through: (i) Data quality control, (ii) Identification and localization of fishing events by gear type, (iii) Calculation of fishing effort (number of fishing days and operations), catches (in weight and value), and catch per unit effort on appropriate temporal (e.g., month, year) and spatial scales (e.g., 5 nm² grid) for various fishing gears, (iv) Exploratory data analysis and visualization by gear type, (v) Spatio-temporal modelling to describe, summarize, and predict the activity and catches of different fishing gears, (vi) Evaluation of the overlap between fishing activity by gear type and the areas designated for wind farm installation; calculation of the proportion of use of these areas in terms of fishing effort and the proportion of landings in weight and value originating from these areas.
     
  6. Legislation framework: Research Fellowship Holder Statute, in accordance with Law 40/2004, of 18 August, in its current version and the FCT Regulation for Research Studentships and Fellowships, in its current version  (Reg. 950/2019 published in DR on 16th  December: https://dre.pt/application/file/a/127230968,  or at the FCT website: https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamento.phtml.pt), and FCiências.ID Fellowship Regulation, as approved on 12th May 2020 (available at Regulamento de Bolsas de Investigação Científica da FCiências.ID).
     
  7. Place of work: The work will be developed at the CEAUL, FCUL under the scientific supervision of Professor Marília Antunes.
     
  8. Fellowship duration: This position is initially opened for 3 months due to start in November 2024. The fellowship contract may be potentially renewed for  until the end of the project, in accordance with the provisions of Regulation of Research Fellowships from the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P and FCiências.ID Fellowship Regulation. 
     
  9. Monthly allowance: The fellowship amounts to € 990,98, according to table values of the FCiências.ID Fellowship Regulation. The fellowship holder will have a personal accident insurance and can ensure the right to social security through adherence to the voluntary social insurance scheme, if not covered by any other social protection scheme, pursuant to Código dos Regimes Contributivos do Sistema Previdencial de Segurança Social.
    The fellowship will be paid monthly by bank transfer.
     
  10. Evaluation and selection process: Candidates will be assessed by Detailed curriculum vitae regarding education in the field of Statistics and skills in data analysis and programming languages (80%), and a motivation letter (20%), which will be evaluated based on the candidate's experience in relation to the proposed work plan, on a scale from 0 to 100 points.
    Applicants whose application is scored with a final classification of less than 50 points are not eligible for granting a fellowship.
     
  11. Selection Committee: Marília Antunes (President of the Jury); Patrícia Bermudez and Soraia Pereira (effective members); Lisete Sousa and Tiago Marques (alternate members).
     
  12. Publication/notification of results: All the candidates will be notified by e-mail, sent by the call holder, with the selection meeting minutes enclosed.
     
  13. Deadlines: This call for applications is open from 23/10/2024 to 31/10/2024 .

  15.   16. Time limits for the appeal procedure: In case of negative decision, the candidates have 10 business days, after the date of announcement of the results of the candidates evaluation, to pronounce their disagreement in accordance with the Código do Procedimento Administrativo. Appeals against the final decision may be submitted to the Administration Board of FCiências.ID (fciencias.id@fciencias-id.pt) within 15 business days after the notification date.

 

 

Note 1: The documents that prove the entitlement of the academic qualifications and diplomas can be dismissed during the application period and replaced by a declaration on their honour from the applicant (Minuta PTMinute EN). Their delivery is mandatory for the fellowship contractualization.
